Cellular Shades - The Difference in Cell Sizes

Cellular Shades are great for energy efficiency, noise insulation, and clean style, but there are a variety of cell and pleat sizes within this broad group of blinds. Although cellular shades are durable, high quality window treatments, they do often cost more than traditional blinds so it's important to consider all of your options prior to purchasing.

Cellular shades are named for their open cellular, or honeycomb structure. Although they look like traditional pleated shades when they lie flat, cellular shades are actually composed of two or more layers of fabric, pinched and joined at the pleats to created pockets of air between them. It's these air pockets, or cells, that give these blinds exceptional insulating qualities.

Although you have color options for both sides of your cellular shades, you also have options in cell size and number. Both of these options play a huge role in determining which cellular shade best suits your needs.

Cell sizes are important: The larger the cell size, the larger the pleat and the more window depth it occupies. Larger pleats also have a distinctive look that resembles the look of the wider slats of traditional blinds. Smaller cells, on the other hand, have smaller pleats and generally match the look of modern décor. Because they have smaller cells, these cellular shades take up less space on a window and can work well with shallow sills. Small cells can also be grouped together to provide even greater insulation.

Single layer cellular shades come in a variety of cell sizes. Multiple cell layers, otherwise known as multiple cell numbers, only come in smaller cell sizes.

Common cell sizes:

• 3/8” - The smallest size cell that usually appears as smaller pleats. Single layers of these small cells are great for shallow windows, but this cell size is also used for the multi-layered cellular shades that are better for insulation and energy efficiency.
• 7/8” - Available as a single or double layer cellular shade. This cell size is good for shallow to deep windows depending on cell numbers.
• 1/2” - Available in single cell layer shades and resemble the traditional style and width of common pleated blinds.
• 9/16” - Available in single layer shades, these are good for slightly deeper windows.
• 3/4” - Although these are not the largest size, they are too big to come in anything but single layer cellular shades. Good for moderate to deep set windows.
• 1” - These are considered large cells and are only available in single layers. Good for deep sills and windows.
• 2” - Large cells that offer good sound and energy insulation but only come in single layers. These cellular shades provide a clean, traditional look and are great for deep windows.

Not all brands carry all cell sizes and it's important to determine which type of cellular shades best suit your needs before narrowing down your choice of manufacturers. Some manufacturers have large pleated shades that involve multiple, oval cells tucked inside. They give the appearance of a single layer, large cell shade, but actually consist of multiple layers of small, oblong cells.
